A page can earn a strong organic position and still be absent from an AI Overview. It can also appear as a supporting source for a question where it does not hold a top traditional position. That makes a single keyword ranking a poor summary of visibility. At We Do SEO, I separate the surfaces and ask a more useful question: did the right person find enough information to take the next step?
Key takeaways
- A top organic rank does not prove inclusion in an AI answer.
- Use a repeatable prompt set and record citations separately from mentions.
- Judge progress with enquiries and useful visits, not screenshots alone.

Separate the search surfaces
Track the ordinary results, local results when relevant, and AI-generated answers as separate observations. Record the exact question, location, device, date, and whether the brand was cited, merely mentioned, or omitted. A screenshot without the underlying query cannot tell you whether visibility improved.
Make the page genuinely useful
A service page should explain who the service is for, what happens during the work, where it is available, and how a prospect can contact the business. Add firsthand details and proof that an interchangeable industry summary could not provide. These are useful to readers even if an AI system never cites the page.
Put this into practice
One practical example
For a local service business, test “Who offers [service] in [city]?” and “What should I ask before hiring [provider]?” Those are different intents. The first needs location and proof; the second needs a clear educational answer.
Connect visibility to outcomes
Review Search Console queries and landing pages beside GA4 engagement and qualified enquiries. Treat AI referrals as one observable channel, with attribution limits; some AI-assisted journeys arrive without a clean referral tag. Log a baseline before making changes and compare the same query set over time.

Frequently asked questions
Does Google require special AI markup?
No. Google says its AI search features do not require a special schema or machine-readable AI file. A page still needs to be indexable and eligible for a search snippet.
Can I see every AI Overview impression in one report?
Use the reporting available in your Search Console account and keep a separate sample of important queries. Reporting and answer layouts evolve, so do not infer complete coverage from a handful of screenshots.
Should I rewrite every page for AI?
Start with pages that answer real buying questions and have measurable search demand. Improving clarity and original evidence generally helps more than inserting an AI-focused paragraph into every page.
